Standards

Standardization is the process of developing, issuing and implementing an agreed upon established norm or requirement.  Standards are by nature voluntary documents, however, due to the need to protect national security, health, safety or the environment, they may be conferred with mandatory effect according to legislation.  Standards ensure that complex technical functions are done correctly and that legal requirements are fulfilled.  Without the use of standards there would be inconsistencies and noncompliance in the marketplace.

The Barbados National Standards Institution has developed a number of standards relating to a various subjects.  There are 48 standards which have been conferred with mandatory effect by the Government of Barbados.
